September 2024 Indie Publisher Publishing Report

Mid-August I was talking with my brother about my publishing journey and how I really wanted to live out our childhood dream of having our own comic book company, well after much talking about that we decided that the first step was to do an indie publishing company instead.

Were we crazy?

Of course, writers have to be a little crazy don’t we? I mean we let a character in our head tell us whats going to happen next. We give life to words. And I can’t think of anything that is crazier than that. But let me get back on track, what do we know about the publishing world? Well, I published my first book in 2021 and since released a few books after that, so I think that I have a firm grip on what it’s like to publish a book (well we went with anthologies and like Jon Snow I knew nothing). But if there is a will there is a way and this has been a crash course on how to start a publishing company and to grow one.

Growing a company is hard.

So, for someone that hates social media, I can’t market if my life depended on it. And my brother never publish, this was a learning experience for us both. But to show the struggle I decided to follow in the Great Bob McGough steps (check out his page here). So, this is to show you all how hard this can really be. How hard it is to call oneself a profitable writer.

Now that being said we don’t have a book out yet and working on one. We did do a Kickstarter, but the money doesn’t hit the account until October. So of course, we put more money in to the company than what we made.
