A Blog About Friday the 13th in September

Friday the 13th in September is one of life’s great pleasures. Its the first month of fall(depending on the part of the country you are in it might be a month away yet or you might be a month into it, Im playing with averages, and also talking about my country of origin and am aware its different…you know what let me just move on.  My point is its near the start of Fall/Autumn and thats spooky season in my part of the woods.  But its also close enough to tthe end of summer where a film about summer camp will still hit and give you warm summer hang out vibes.  And obviously no series captures that exact vibe as well as the one that took the dates name: Friday the 13th.

Its a strange series, from killer changing after the first film (SPOILER: It was Pamela Vorhees at first), to the characters iconic look being introduced in the 3rd. In the 4th film we meet Jason’s arch-rival(Tommy Jarvis), testing out a new killer again in 5, Jason becoming a Deadite in 6, fighting Carrie in 7, taking a boat trip to Toronto in 8, whatever the fuck 9 was, trip to space in X and a fight with Fredward before a reboot, the Friday the 13th series can mean many things to many people.  For me its a series about the end of innocence and how we fight so hard against it.  From Pam wanting revenge for the death of her “innocent” son on through there is a underlying story about fighting the loss of innocence and growing up and that its “better” to die young and “innocent” than to grow old and bitter.  Not saying I agree with this sentiment at all, only saying that the subtext is there for you to interpret.

That is not to say I think there are no other ways to see the series.  For some its just sexy teens getting drunk, high and murdered by a killer.  Others see it as a statement about Youth in Rebellion and the society that tries to keep them in line.  Ive read a reddit post years ago that explained how they were a take down of colonialism and the murder of indigenous people.  Ive even heard it was about the music industry and corruption that drove real artists away.  I do not think any of these are accurate, but I do think they are probably as accurate as my ideas on it.

But my point is September Friday the 13th is a rare treat(last was 2019, next wont be till 2030), we wont get one in October again until 2028, so enjoy this September one.  Id suggest watching the first three this moth taking a month off to marathon the Halloween films, in Nov watch some classic Holiday Horror Flicks to prep for the Christmas Chaos launch, then in Dec mix the Jarvis trilogy in with your Holiday flicks after you finish reading Christmas Chaos.  Then in 2025 you can complete your education in the series.

I’m Nate, your you, let me let you go now.
