Jason is an icon. From the moment he first popped up out of the water he was cemented into pop culture. He would cleave his way through countless teens and young adults right into our hearts. The thing is that he was not a one note undead killer from the get go.
See unlike most horror icons, Jason evolved. He started out as a victim, an innocent child whose death was tragic. He was brought back as the killer for the sequel and stuck a bag on his head (BTW, my story “Sacked” from 3 Sisters is a reference to this look by Jason) and then got his iconic hockey mask in Part 3 before meeting his untimely death in Part 4. After a Roy Burns sighting in V we finally get undead Jason, the version most people think of in Part VI.
This is the movie that has that Jason that most of us remember. This is the version from the NES game, this is the version that got done over and over again in parody and homage.

For me personally it is also one of the first “serious” horror films I ever watched with my daughter, not the first that one is later in the month, but an early one. Horror films and watching them has been an important part of many relationships in my life, and when the memory matters so much the movies do too. But yes, Some folks sure got a strange idea of entertainment
