My name is Jessica Nettles, and as an independent author, I appreciate excellent independent films. I recommend Carnival of Souls (1962), which is a very early indie film directed by Herk Harvey (his only directoral credit). Yes, it’s black and white. Yes, it’s quiet, low-key horror that doesn’t move like the horror of today. But the weirdness, creepiness, and off-kilterness of the entire experience makes it work, even as jaded as we can be as viewers. Take a step back in time, slow down, and maybe even you can dance in the Carnival of Souls.
Jessica Nettles is the author of The Children of Menlo Park: The Thrilling Supernatural Adventures of Kate Warne, Lady Detective and the upcoming novel Kudzu Ridge. Her sci-fi and horror short fiction is featured in Off the Beaten Path 3, Georgia Gothic, Lonely Hollows, League of Monsters, Southern Fried Cthulhu, Effigies and Incantations, and Southern Monsters. She also is a regular and frequent guest GM for the show Hit the Dice on the Go Indie Now Network (YouTube). She lives north of Atlanta, GA with her two black cats.
